The Wedding Trend to get Behind: Eco-friendly Weddings

One thing to look out for on your visit to a bridal fair this 2020 in the Philippines, are exhibitors that offer to plan you a sustainable or eco-friendly wedding. Let’s face it: celebrations in general can tend to be excessive, wasteful, and can generate a big amount of pollution. Weddings are no exception. From small things like confetti, using styro containers, to bigger things like needing a car for every entourage for the perfectly edgy entrance that also produced a copious amount of carbon emission. Going green shouldn’t be just a fad; after all, saving the environment means maintaining a habitable earth for our young one so here are some eco-friendly wedding ideas to try for you big day.

Venue

Choose an open venue that does not require air conditioning. In a country like the Philippines, this might seem like a a bad idea because of the tropical heat so try scheduling your wedding during the cold season. Also choose a time that maximizes daylight; get married early morning, and in the same venue, host the reception until before sunset to also save on light energy.

Decorations

Pick a venue that you don’t have to add decorations to; but in the same way, if you need to decorate, go for items that you can reuse after or borrow decors instead. Flowers are going to go to waste if they aren’t potted so only use live and potted flowers. If you want to throw a bouquet, borrow plastic ones instead. Use reusable signage as well like chalk on blackboard or colored pens on white board or glass.

Invitations

Go digital. Don’t feel sorry for not having an invitation that is more elaborate, your guests will throw it out anyway. At the 2020 bridal fair that you will be attending in the Philippines, don’t forget to ask if your coordinator can hook you up with a digital specialist who can create you nice Social Media invitations or even a banging website! While you’re at it, make the program digital, too.

Favors

Go green all the way, even with your favors, tokens, and other takeaways. Make your wedding an opportunity to encourage others to go green. Send guests home with potted plants like succulents; of if you want to skip the pot, go for air plants. You can also send them off with seeds & saplings.

Food

On top of the list of things that go to waste during an event, especially at weddings, is food. Dispense food and don’t let the guests have their way; this way you can minimize leftovers—this isn’t to say they can’t have as much as they want. Let them come back for more but don’t let them get more than they can finish. Also, make a plan on how and who can bring home clean leftover food after the event.

Gifts

Here’s an idea. It might not sit well with you at the onset but how about foregoing gifts altogether? Instead of gifts, how about donations? Pick a charity and tell your guests that all their contributions will help the charity of your choice. On your visit to a bridal fair this 2020, try to ask around if any of the exhibitors have had experience with this kind of “gifting” scheme. In a country like the Philippines, there are many institutions that could really use the help that you and your beloved guests can offer.
